Where I alive now (Sacramento), the ideal is for the house to face due north and so that the rear of the home (where almost of the windows and glass doors are) is not getting direct sun in the late afternoon and early evenings in summer, yet is getting it during the wintertime when the lord's day is depression on the southern horizon. I tin bbq on my patio at 6 pm in July and exist in total shade (equally is my rear-installed ac unit). The worst is for the house to face up east considering then the rear and patio/deck are blasted on summertime evenings, plus the house is lit up at v a.k in the summer from light coming in to the front windows. Is this less and then in your surface area given that you are further southward, so the lord's day is college in the sky in the winter, spends less time in the west in the summer, and you take more afternoon clouds/rain where direct sunlight hitting rear windows or patios doesn't happen every bit much? Or is a n-facing house nevertheless the ideal?

No, information technology is not less here. If y'all prefer a north facing firm in CA then you would here, besides. That is how my firm faces, and information technology is great if you like having a backyard garden. The merely issue we have is that pesky sun in the late afternoon makes it too sunny on the dorsum covered porch in the summertime.

I had the luxury of camping on our rural belongings for a year before siting the house. Nosotros have a lot of trees, then early morn, tardily afternoon sun are less of an issue. Deciduous trees are your friends! Nosotros take a mount view directly north of usa, simply I rotated the house about thirty degrees to the east, rather than have the back of the firm face dead north. Whatsoever side of a house that faces directly north volition be common cold and uninviting, and tend to abound algae or mold. If y'all get ice or snow, it won't melt, either. Our business firm faces s-southeast, merely we accept a long front porch that shades most of the forepart. The garage is on the due west-northwest side, so it blocks the afternoon sun (if the trees didn't already practise so). Our back deck (due north-northeast) gets some morning lord's day, but starts to go shade later on noon or so. Every bit for the sunrise, you'll find it somewhat later here, both due to united states of america being further south, and relatively far due west in our time zone. Sunrise right now is about 6:45 AM.

A lot of house siting in this surface area will depend on the individual site. At an individual site the combination of topography and views may drive the firm to be sited differently. The siting of the business firm related to dominicus angles is still a gene just it often takes a dorsum seat on a hilly site or one with a view. As the previous poster mentioned, deciduous trees tin frequently exist used to effectively screen out or reduce unwanted summer sun and heat. In the winter, when those same trees lose their leaves, you become more dominicus to provide warmth during the common cold months. Whatsoever time you have the luxury of building a dwelling house it is good if yous tin can notice the site in all four seasons to get a feel for how all-time to site the business firm.

Yes, very true about the individual site making a difference. Our lot is small and treeless, so nosotros don't have that advantage.

That all makes sense to me. Any newer suburban lot hither is treeless and my 15 year onetime redwoods to the west of the house are just now large plenty to help. The trees to the southward are either too far away and/or throw their shade east in the late afternoon. I agree re the moss on the northern exposure - even in dry California that happens, though it isn't real pregnant. Sunrise here now is at virtually 6. I'd be buying an existing dwelling, so I'll have to add together orientation to the search criteria. I practise want a lot with some mature trees or an adjacent forest/woods but would like some open lawn between the house'south rear and the trees.

Adept luck finding a house or a route or anything facing due north or south hither. I accept been here for ane year and am still lost all the time. Most of the roads are meandering on an 10 axis and it really screws with your sense of direction. A freeway that says north, may actually be meandering east or west, and vise versa. You will too find a lot of neighborhoods with homes built on meandering angles due to winding hilly roads or mountain views. Having lived your unabridged life in the north where everything is set upward on Northward,Southward,Due east,W grids, your internal compass becomes completely off in the Upstate. That N, S, E, W compass in your caput becomes constantly flipped at and angle downward here while out driving, etc. Its almost like people only built roads over existing old winding wagon trails here instead of using any compass or urban planning grids. I have noticed that about people down here use mature trees planted shut to homes for shade, while upward north, trees planted close to houses are normally chopped down to prevent storm damage from limbs falling on homes. You will come across a lot of mature trees and heavily shaded yards here. Final edited by L0ve; 08-06-2014 at 06:24 PM..

That's true; where nosotros lived in FL, all of the roads were set up upwardly exactly Due north,South,E,W, and with the tiny lots, and so were the houses. Having grown upward in rural CT, I much adopt the windy country roads. I intentionally take different roads only to run into where they go. No GPS- that would be cheating!

Same for us with 20 years in FL, and 17 in OK before that ... all of the roads were always laid out on a filigree. I prefer the windy roads (and hills) too. |

That's truthful, they are fun for those weekend route trips where the main goal is to get lost and explore.
